Stolen from bdar and 911939 and loosestrudel:

Set your playlist on shuffle. Write down the opening lyrics of the first thirty songs that come up. Ask your friends to guess the name of the songs (artist optional); bold and reveal the ones that are answered correctly.

(For obvious reasons, instrumental pieces and songs in a foreign language have been omitted from this game. I will not include musical nonsense words such as "la" or "doot" in the opening lines, nor spoken words, nor sample loops. Artists may repeat. I also cheated and skipped things that I thought were way too obscure--unless someone could have identified "She Watch Channel Zero?!" by a-Politiq.)

  1. I'd rather fuck who I want than kill who I am told to!
  2. Leave me alone. I'm in control. I'm in control.
  3. It's so cold in this house.
  4. You promised me the ending would be clear; you'd let me know when the time was now.
  5. You can keep your black tongue. Well, I found out the mortuary.
  6. Punk show! Mom won't know! Run out the back door; he's passed out on the floor.
  7. She knows nothing at all about nothing. The moment I saw her was something.
  8. You say you want diamonds and a ring of gold. U2, "All I Want Is You".
  9. Generals gathered in their masses, just like witches at black masses. Faith No More/Black Sabbath, "War Pigs".
  10. All hail the new king in town! Prince, "Partyman".
  11. Knocked up nine months ago, and what she fitnah [sic] have, she don't know.
  12. Spitting in a wishing well. Blown to hell crash, on the last splash. The Breeders, "Cannonball".
  13. You only see what your eyes want to see.
  14. I've been out walking. I don't do too much talking these days. Nico, "These Days".
  15. 1, 2, 1, 2, keep it on! Listen to this shit because we keep it 'til dawn. The Beastie Boys featuring Q-Tip, "Get It Together".
  16. You heard that we were great, but now you think we're lame, since you saw the show last night.
  17. I think I'll go home and mull this over 'fore I cram it down my throat.
  18. I got a letter from the government the other day; opened it, read it, it said they were suckers.
  19. The waiting drove me mad; you're finally here and I'm a mess.
  20. I don't want to move too fast, but, can't resist your sexy ass
  21. Sucker love is heaven-sent, you pucker up, our passion's spent
  22. Pretty little hairdo don't do what it used to.
  23. Well, I miss my mother, and I miss being her son.
  24. You're sorta stuck where you are, but in your dreams, you can drive expensive cars, or live on Mars, and have it your way. The Flaming Lips, "Bad Days".
  25. Yours is the only version of my desertion that I could ever subscribe to.
  26. I've been trying to tell you, over and over. Look at these, my child-bearing hips!
  27. I bet you fall in bed too easily with the beautiful girls who are shyly brave. Liz Phair, "6'1"".
  28. You can run on for a long time.
  29. Let us talk about some trivial things; we like a bit of this and that. XTC, "Frivolous Tonight".
  30. What a drag it is getting old. The Rolling Stones, "Mother's Little Helper".

8. You say you want diamonds and a ring of gold.

U2, "All I Want Is You."

10. All hail the new king in town!

Prince, goddammit, it was from Batman, but I don't know the title. I'll guess: "New King in Town." Why not.

It's "Party Man."

If it weren't for the caveat that I wouldn't do spoken word, I'd have loved to see the line "Gentlemen! Let's broaden our minds! Lllllawrence?" appear in this meme.

28. Hm. I'd guess "Run On," by Moby, but these aren't the first sung words...but considering the whole song is made of samples...I don't know.
29. XTC, "Frivolous Tonight" (although I believe the lyrics are "Let us talk about some trivial things we like"

Never mind. You got the words in there; I just couldn't cipher your punctuation and rearrangement of the phrases.

14. "These Days" from the soundtrack to The Royal Tennenbaums. I'd find the name of the artist, but I'd have to cheat and check my iPod.

I so would have gotten more work done if I had stayed home.

Yeah, not a whole lot is getting done here today, either--it's a day off for our customer but not for us, so that means no new orders or e-mails or nothin'.

Plus, I brought a cheesecake.

I mean, come on, these are softballs:

9. Black Sabbath, "War Pigs"
30. Rolling Stones, "Mother's Little Helper"

The rest...I got nothing. Should I?

Technically, mine was the Faith No More version, but whatev.

The rest...I got nothing. Should I?

I'd expect you, specifically, to get 7 and 17. 13 and 19 are major songs by extremely major artists of the last 20 years. 20's from a record I know that you have. And if you, specifically, aren't already a fan of #22--either the song or the artist--I'm surprised, and you're missing out.

Back to work, then! I'll see what I can do about those...

19 sounds really familiar...can't place it...
