So I've decided to become more of a general baseball fan, and not just a devotee of the Way, the Truth, and the Light. In that spirit, I'm wondering: anyone want to try to give fantasy baseball a shot? (loosestrudel, I'm looking in your direction...) MLB.com, ESPN.com and Yahoo all have free leagues available. About all I know about fantasy baseball is that the degree of difficulty is higher than that of fantasy football (i.e., it requires a little more tending day-to-day), but I'm willing to give it a shot. Who's with me?

I'd likely be in, although during June and July I might be somewhat absentee. I'd prefer Yahoo, if for no other reason than I wouldn't have to remember another password/login.

oh man, oh man....

I've always avoided fantasy baseball for fear of the time it would take from me. Though I'm tempted, I think I'll stay away...I think....yeah, I can't commit to it without going nuts. And I don't want to go nuts. Or more nuts.

...not just a devotee of the Way, the Truth, and the Light

Aside, I take this to mean that you're not disillusioned with the aura and mystique--simply that you're broadening your view to the rest of the leagues? That is, you're not praying somewhere else than the temple of Jeter, are you?

No, no, worry not--The Mariano Rivera Shrine still stands (AND IT GODDAMN WELL BETTER KEEP STANDING AFTER THIS SEASON)--I'm just looking for a better way to fill that part of the calendar labelled "Waiting For Football".

I'm all over that. I play Yahoo fantasy baseball every year in public leagues and have usually finished pretty well. So, I should do better than my dismal, dismal finish in fantasy football this year.

If you decide to do it, sign me up.

And I'm guessing you're not being ironic when you call the Yankees "the Way, the Truth, and the Light"? Yikes. When you watch Star Wars, are you cheering on the Empire?

Yeah, sometimes.

You're new here, so I'll tell you the quick version of the story: I was born in upstate New York (Albany) and lived there until I was 7; my dad was born in Manhattan and grew up in Staten Island and the Albany area. About the only thing my dad and I could talk about then was baseball and football (and it's something we continued to be able to talk about for the rest of his life), and since he was a Yankees fan (as was HIS father), so am I--all of which is to say that I come by this legitimately. I love the New York Yankees more than I love America, my relatives, and oxygen.

Gotcha. I used to be that way with the Dallas Cowboys, because I would always watch games with my Dad. But then I lost interest in football for a long time.

I'm getting that way with the Cubs, even though I only caught that mental illness after moving here 6 years ago. It's really insidious, it gets inside you and makes you crazy.

If you weren't already hooked, I'd urge you to run away. But oh those highs....

No, it's way too late for me. Has been since October 2003. *sigh*

Not me. I played last year in a public league, under the theory that if I did well, I would become disillusioned with fantasy sports altogether -- after all, if someone who couldn't name ten active players (okay, I could probably do ten, but not twenty) could rock a fantasy league, then fantasy sports weren't nearly the brainpower-first-luck-second game I liked to think they were.

I rocked the league for three weeks. Then I crashed and burned and I think I came in last. Even with day-to-day tending.

Understandable. Expected, even.

...72 days to the draft. :)
