We've done this before, you know the drill. "Will Win" is who I think will win the Oscar; "Should Win" is who I think should win (i.e., of the nominees, the one I'd vote for); "If This Wins, I'll Be Angry" is pretty self-explanatory1; and "Where's...?" is someone I think was gravely passed over.

Best Animated Feature:
Will Win: Cars
Should Win: Monster House
If This Wins, I'll Be Angry: Cars
Where's...?: Over the Hedge

Best Supporting Actress:
Will Win: Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls
Should Win: Abigail Breslin, Little Miss Sunshine
If She Wins, I'll Be Angry: Rinko Kikuchi, Babel
Where's...?: Emily Watson, The Proposition

Best Supporting Actor:
Will Win: Eddie Murphy, Dreamgirls
Should Win: Mark Wahlberg, The Departed (Edging out Alan Arkin for my vote.)
If He Wins, I'll Be Angry: Eddie Murphy, Dreamgirls
Where's...?: Ben Affleck, Hollywoodland

Best Actress:
Will Win: Helen Mirren, The Queen
Should Win: Penelope Cruz, Volver
If She Wins, I'll Be Angry: Kate Winslet, Little Children (But not too angry)
Where's...?: Toni Colette, Little Miss Sunshine

Best Actor:
Will Win: Forest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland
Should Win: Forest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland
If He Wins, I'll Be Angry: Peter O'Toole, Venus
Where's...?: Ken Watanabe, Letters From Iwo Jima

Best Adapted Screenplay:
Will Win: William Monahan, The Departed
Should Win: William Monahan, The Departed
If They Win, I'll Be Angry: Alfonso Cuarón & Timothy J. Sexton and David Arata and Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby, Children of Men
Where's...?: Michael Mann, Miami Vice

Best Original Screenplay:
Will Win: Michael Arndt, Little Miss Sunshine
Should Win: Michael Arndt, Little Miss Sunshine
If He Wins, I'll Be Angry: Guillermo Arriaga, Babel
Where's...?: Nick Cave, The Proposition

Best Director:
Will Win: Martin Scorsese, The Departed
Should Win: Martin Scorsese, The Departed
If He Wins, I'll Be Angry: Alejandro González Iñárritu, Babel
Where's...?: Alfonso Cuarón, Children of Men

Best Picture:

Will Win: The Departed
Should Win: The Departed
If This Wins, I'll Be Angry: Babel2
Where's...?: United 93

1When Crash won Best Picture last year after I named it my "Angry" pick, I threw--in public--what can only be described as a "temper tantrum".

2The above-mentioned temper tantrum, however, will be as the demurest flap of the most delicate of butterfly's wings compared to the HURRICANE OF FURY I will unleash if Babel wins this year. So be warned.

I guess Alan Arkin was the dark horse nobody saw coming.

And seriously, where was Ken Watanabe. He gave such a beautiful performance. I loved the acting in that movie.

PS--Was it me, or did this Oscars seem shorter and way more fun than past shows?

I heart Ellen.

I'm not really surprised by Arkin's win--it makes sense, particularly with some of the Murphy/Norbit backlash going around.

And Watanabe was so fucking good. All I can guess is that not enough actors saw Letters to get him nominated (as opposed to a fairly facile nomination for Will Smith), but the picture was seen by enough of the Academy to get it nominated (or it was just Clintism).

The telecast came in at under four hours, which is always a plus. As for fun, I can't be sure--for the third consecutive year I was watching at a place without sound. I know last year poor Jon Stewart completely died in the room, but everyone watching at home loved him--I'd guess that Ellen's less cerebral (but not necessarily less funny) comedy played to the crowd a little better.
