Two quick questions designed to start arguments in the comments:

1) Is J.K. Rowling the most significant female writer in human history?

2) Now that Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni are dead, who is the greatest living filmmaker?

Sowing interweb discord entertains me.

To add some more fun to #2 - how many people would have considered those two gentlemen to be the greatest living filmmakers, anyway? Who's to say that the answer to this question has anything to do with the deaths of two recent (even somewhat obscure?) art film makers?

Obscure to most of us, anyway, although widely acknowledged within the industry as well as among the most dedicated film fans as brilliant at their craft. I was aware of their brilliance despite having never seen a film by either one of them.

How about Hayao Miyazaki?

Me. I would have said Bergman was the greatest living filmmaker. I just threw in Antonioni because he, too, just died.

A gentleman with the initials FFC comes most quickly to mind.

But, if we branch out our discussion to all of those individuals who have had a profound impact on film, Ray Harryhausen.

But, that's just me.
